BACKGROUND NOTE

BHP Billiton was created as the result of a merger between BHP and Billiton. It was a dual listed company where the two listed companies with their own shareholders shared ownership of the business....The history of BHP dated back to 1883, when silver-lead-zinc mineral deposits were discovered at Broken Hill in New South Wales, Australia. In the same year, the Broken Hill Mining Company was established. Two years later, BHP was incorporated in Victoria, Australia, and started mining at Broken Hill. On August 13, 1885, the company was listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX).
